Highland Lakes Democratic Women were pleased to welcome Jay Kleberg, candidate for Texas Land Commissioner, to their February meeting at Double Horn Brewing Company. Jay Kleberg is a member of a South Texas family that owns one of the largest ranches in the country, the King Ranch. Kleberg is seeking the Democratic nomination for Texas land commissioner and has been endorsed by several prominent newspapers, including the Houston Chronicle, San Antonio Express- News and Austin American Statesman.
Jay Kleberg is an Austin-based conservationist whose duty as land commissioner would be to oversee the General Land Office which handles the Texas Permanent School Fund, the Veteran’s Land Board to improve benefits for veterans and natural disaster relief funds. The GLO also oversees the Alamo and our beaches. The issues Kleberg cares about deeply include fighting climate change, better management of the disaster recovery funds and protecting the state’s public and economic health. He states that “The passion I gained for environmental advocacy as a child has led me to more than a decade-long career in conservation”. Highland Lakes Democratic Women meet on the 4th Thursday of each month (except Nov and Dec). All are welcome.
